In life there are many doors for us to go through. Rarely are they open and rarely do we know what lies beyond them.
We want to get a glimpse of what lies ahead in our lives. But how will that help us? If we knew that a loved one were to die, it would terrify us, diminish us and cause terrible anxiety and worry. The relationship we now have with them would change from one based on love to one driven by fear.
No, to know the future is not really what we want to know. What we really desire to know is that we will be able to cope with whatever comes our way. God promises us that whatever we go through we will never be alone, for he will always be with us. Even should we go through the fire, we will not be burnt. Even should we go through the waters, we will not drown. That reassurance is also a promise, a promise we can hold onto however hard life becomes. And with God by our side, we will be able to cope with whatever the future holds for us, both positive or negative.
As life goes on we discover that there is no such thing as all good or all bad, for within everything that seems good there is the potential for harm to come, whereas in something which appears bad, new life might be forming. We can never know what are the weeds in life or the flowers. We can never know what will be the wheat that will be ground to make bread to feed us and others and the chaff which can be discarded. So, it is dangerous to even try to pull up anything in our life, believing it is a weed, when it might evolve into something which will make bread to feed the world.

Within each child born there is the potential for that life to bring good or harm. Much will depend upon their choices as they meet with hundreds and thousands of life’s questions. Some will evolve into wheat whilst others might evolve into weeds. However, anywhere along the line, one can change from one to the other. Even on one’s deathbed, you can have a revelation which totally changes your attitude to life and people.
Take the story of Scrooge. He was visited by three ghosts who gave him revelations about the past, present and the future. In one short night he was changed beyond all recognition because he rediscovered truths which had been hidden for many years.

One of the truths he discovered was the preciousness of all lives and the importance of the good things in life like kindness, generosity, selflessness and love. Anyone can change, so never write any one off as a weed, for at the last minute, they may rediscover what Scrooge discovered and change their way.
Never fear the doors that lie ahead of you. Be wary of wanting to know what lies beyond those doors before you choose to open them and walk through them. Simply trust that the one who walks by your side will ensure that whatever happens you will cope and cope well, possibly being further transformed into your true likeness.
How do you feel about your unknown future?
As doors open to you, how do you react, with fear or hope?
Are there areas in your life in which you believe you are too old to change or incapable of changing? What are these and why do you believe this?
