A Refuge in Troubled Times
Day 3 The Hand and the Glove

God is Life and Life is God. When you find God you too discover Life in her fullness and magnificence. Where you find life in her Glory, you too find God. They go together like a hand in a glove. The glove is nothing without the life of the hand within it. It was made to be filled with the hand’s life.

We too are like gloves, who need to be filled with the hand of God before we can become all we were created to be. Too many let their gloves rest on the sideboard or in a draw. The glove never discovers its meaning or purpose. However, for those who recognise their emptiness without the hand inside them, moving and having its being, the hand promises to fill them as and when they are ready.

Some gloves say, “you can only come as far as my front door, for I will never allow you inside my home and heart.” They remain as they were before, just an empty glove.

Some say, “OK, you can come into my life but only just a little.” These gloves sometimes look like a clenched fist, as the finger spaces remain empty and floppy. They tend to be limited in what the hand and they can do together.

Then there are those who know that they need to trust the hand into their glove’s finger spaces too. They discover that when they are completely full of the hand, their fingers can be used for intricate, gentle, life giving tasks, often creative and nurturing.

The hand of God will never go into gloves until or unless he or she is invited in. Your glove will always be honoured and shown great dignity and care. However, for those gloves who learn to let in God and Life, their lives will never remain the same ever again. For they will have been transformed from empty gloves into Temples that hold the life and love of their maker within them. The gloves’ purpose will have been achieved, to be full of God and Life and Meaning and Purpose.
Prayer
Giver of Life,

Help me to know you as the hand within my glove. I have tried to live as full a life as I have felt able to but recognise now that a glove without a hand is no life.

Help me to learn to trust you so that eventually your hand can fill every part of my glove and together we can be a blessing to this world we both live within in a way that only you know how.

I want to be a blessing to others and to you. Teach me how best to open up the endless possibilities of a glove whose found its purpose in life, to receive and be guided by the hand within it. Of this I ask.

Amen.
